Free company check · New York & New Jersey
In New York the Secretary of State is the agent for service on every LLC from the day it is formed. A plaintiff serves Albany, and the state mails the papers to the address filed at formation. Service is legally complete whether or not that letter reaches you.
Is that still you?
New York publishes its Corporation and Business Entity Database as open data. We read the same rows, live, with no key and no login, and keep no copy of what you looked up.
It is where the Department of State mails process when the Secretary of State is served on your company’s behalf. It is often a formation service, a first office, or an agent whose arrangement has since lapsed.
Whether the letter is opened, whether a care-of arrangement is still live, and whether anything has been filed. This is a register lookup, not a court search.
01 What the answer looks like
Every value below is invented. The live answer replaces the box above in place — it has no address of its own, and nothing about it is stored or indexed.
New York does not address the envelope to this company. It addresses it to A FORMATION AGENT (EXAMPLE). A letter reaches you only while that arrangement is live, and the register cannot tell us whether it is.
C/O A FORMATION AGENT (EXAMPLE) 123 OLD BROADWAY, SUITE 400 NEW YORK, NY 10007We are telling you what the register says. We cannot tell you whether a letter sent there is opened, forwarded, or reaches the right desk.
Specimen. EXAMPLE HOLDINGS LLC, State ID 0000000 and the agent name are invented, and no company on the register is named anywhere on this page.
02 What this is not
The rules below are written out in section 2 of the terms, which binds anyone using this lookup whether or not they have an account. They are refusals rather than judgment calls, because each request to bend one looks harmless on its own.
03 New Jersey, honestly
The state toggle in the box says so before you type, rather than after the answer has disappointed you.
New Jersey’s free business name search returns the company, its stable ten-digit Entity ID, its type, its city and its incorporation date. It does not publish the registered agent or any address. A New Jersey answer therefore stops at the company record.
The mechanism there is different too. Service in the Special Civil Part is by mail from the clerk to the registered office, and it is treated as made at the earliest of receipt, a returned receipt, or five days after the envelope is deposited with the Postal Service. New Jersey’s LLC Act does not allow those papers to be delivered electronically.

04 The part we sell
Reading the envelope costs nothing. The paid part is watching a company you own against court sources and telling you when its name turns up in one.
Which sources those are, when each of them last actually ran, and the gap in each one are printed court by court — including the ones that are not running. From $99 a year for one company in one state; the rest of the price list is on the home page. Nothing enters a watchlist until a signed-in owner says the company is theirs.
