00 Coverage

What we watch, and what we do not.

This page is the whole list. It is generated from the same table the product runs on, so a source that is not here is a source nothing is reading — and the courts and case types we do not read at all are on this page too, at the same size as the ones we do.

We do not describe this product as watching "New York". That word covers courts nobody publishes. Below, each source is named, with the gap in that source printed beside it.

Every row below is read from the live coverage table when this page loads, so the words here and the words inside an account are the same words.

Some of the gaps are permanent limits of what the courts themselves publish. Where a gap is permanent, the row below says so.

01 Sources we read

Court by court, with what each source cannot see

Some of these are configured and not yet collecting, and those say so in the Runs column. The rest carry the date each one last finished a run. A source is not described as running here until it has actually produced one.

S.D.N.Y.
U.S. District Court
NY Civil cases filed in the Southern District of New York, from the court's own public docket feed. The feed carries the case caption. Most complaint captions name only the first party on each side: in a one-day sample of S.D.N.Y. filings, 25 of 34 ended in "et al". A company named as a later defendant may not appear in the caption we read. configured

New York State tax warrants NY Tax warrants docketed by the State of New York. A warrant is already a docketed judgment with a lien attached. New York Supreme Court, new cases NY New civil cases filed in the Supreme Court of the State of New York, county by county. Supreme Court only. One of New York's 62 county Supreme Courts is not reachable through this source. not running yet

"Configured" means a collector is set up for that source. It changes to "running" here only once that source has actually finished a successful run, and it says "not running yet" until one has. A source that has gone quiet reads "not running reliably" rather than staying green.

02 What we do not watch

Not covered — read this part

Every line below is a court, a case type, or a check we do not perform. None of them is a roadmap item dressed up as a limitation; where something is permanent, it says so.

  • W.D.N.Y. (U.S. District Court) — This court publishes no public docket feed. District cases filed in Western New York are not watched. Its bankruptcy court is covered separately.
  • New Jersey state courts — No New Jersey state court is watched. The Judiciary's notice of 19 March 2024 revokes all system access for any user automating it, so we do not read njcourts.gov. New Jersey coverage is the two federal courts in this table and nothing else — which leaves out the Special Civil Part, where the clerk serves by mail.
  • Cases served the old way — Personal delivery, a sheriff at your door, or mail sent straight to your office produce no feed entry at the moment of service. We see the case when it reaches a docket we read, if it reaches one.
  • The New Jersey address check — New Jersey's free business search does not publish the registered agent address, so the comparison between the address the state holds and where mail actually reaches you is New York only.
  • New York City Civil Court — including small claims and housing court. A large share of consumer-debt and landlord matters live here and we do not read it.
  • New York's 1,174 town and village courts — no online record of these exists anywhere, for anyone, at any price. This is a permanent gap, not a roadmap item.
  • Companies named behind "et al" — the gap drawn beside this list. It is a limit of what the court itself publishes, not of how hard we look.
How a company disappears behind "et al" in a docket caption A docket caption names one plaintiff and one defendant, then the words "et al". The other defendants, including the company being watched, are not printed in the caption the feed carries. THE CAPTION THE FEED CARRIES ACME SUPPLY CO. v. 118 CLIFTON AVE LLC et al everyone else is behind these two words NOT IN THE CAPTION WE READ 2nd defendant — name not printed 3rd defendant — YOUR COMPANY LLC the one we watch 4th defendant — name not printed
In a one-day sample of S.D.N.Y. filings, 25 of 34 captions ended in "et al". If your company is the third defendant, the words the feed gives us may not contain its name. This is the widest gap in the table above and it applies to every district court in it.

We do not promise how fast an alert arrives, or that a filing will be found. What we will do is print what runs, when it last ran, and what it does not see — on this page, and inside your account.

03 How to read this page

What the words on it mean

Four labels do most of the work in the table above, and one of them is the only one that means a source is actually collecting today.

The status of a source

  • configured — a collector exists for this source. It is what a source reads before any run of it has been confirmed.
  • running — this source has finished a successful run, and the date it last did is printed beside it.
  • not running reliably — the source is set up and its last runs did not succeed. It is not quietly left green.
  • not running yet — built into the plan, not yet collecting. Nothing is being read from it today.

What a source is not

  • A feed is a list of new filings, not the case file. We read what the court publishes.
  • A gap in this table is a gap in your coverage. It is printed at the same size as the coverage for that reason.
  • We are not your registered agent, we do not accept service for you, and nothing we send is legal advice.
  • We never ask for your EIN or your Social Security number.

The free half needs none of this

Reading back the address New York holds for your company — the address a lawsuit would be mailed to — uses the state register, not any court source on this page. It costs nothing, and it is the half most people need first.
